Released on Amethyst Sunset, Mist's debut vinyl release is really something. Fantastic even. Chew on it softly friend. Better still let it rest as Arrowroot melting fine on your unfettered tongue. As ice in a bowl of soup.
As promised here is the second release by Mist (Sam Goldberg & John Elliot [Emeralds]). This 2xC10 cassette release (limited run of 150) again comes from the swell chaps at PizzaWagon. This is slightly different from the first one, perhaps a bit more intricate, but still basically just brilliantly smooth synth drone; warm and wholly hypnotic! I'll put up the self-titled LP pretty soon but in the meantime enjoy Stole Colors.
Mist are Sam Goldberg & John Elliot (Emeralds). Released on Pizza Wagon (1 part Pizza Night, 1 part Wagon), Certain Expansion is the first release, a limited run of 100 c20 cassette tapes, by this gorgeous duo. To sum it up nicely; extremely serene and glistening synth drone from the heavens, not dissimilar to Emeralds in ways, but also managing to create it's own identity. I wouldn't pass this up if you're in any way interested in melodic, peaceful drone. I'll be posting their second cassette release and their new vinyl release in the next few days, but I really love this stuff and I hope you enjoy it for the time being.
"... it just felt like two synthesizers oscillating as yr hurtled through zero gravity in an epic, endless somersault. Really beautiful black hole, blind folded centipede leg jams." - Cassette Gods Review
This is the only release I've heard by Minoy, but it's absolutely amazing and I've been meaning to get more of their stuff for a long long time! Picture Eric Copeland (or Black Dice if you'd prefer) jamming out noise-pop grooves a way back in the 80's. Doth sound fucking good to me! There really isn't too much else to say, I just really love it. It's two tracks, Pretty Young Negro Man followed by Outback, both coming in at just over 30 minutes each. The tracks are muti-layered noise grooves and tape manipulations, and stylistically it's surprisingly undated. Get it and love it sweet babies.
Imagine Black Pus (literally) and Mayyors hooking up and creating some sort of freak out proto-noise, kraut influenced, drone-punk outfit. That's this in an over exaggerated nutshell. I found it a couple of years ago and I always end up going back to it. Its pounding and unending brutal rhythms rip yr head open from ear to ear, while somehow forging this sort of surreal and ethereal wave of numbness that I find calming. It's strange really. It just bangs and bangs and bangs in your head and you space out. I fucking love it! I'm getting far to wordy with this so I'll just say grab it if yr into things that are loud, things that are fast, things that drone on, or things that just kick balls. Dig it?
This (pdf) is the 2nd edition of Les Kapital Industrea, a fantastic little zine put together by a great Halifax artist, and good friend of mine, Matthew Duffy. He's a visual artist and musician, and is becoming somewhat of a cult icon around town due to some unfortunate incidents resulting in some rather absurd internet banter and general hatred among members of the community. He gets into trouble and keeps things interesting with his spastic though heartfelt creations. Some of his projects include царь of (NEO) & Jiba-Zapz, as well as playing cacophone & clarinet (not to mention dancing) for the psych-punk band The Ether, all of which based out of Halifax. This is a great zine, put together with contributions from a ton of fantastic artists and writers, most of which from Halifax and Montreal.
Also, check out this interview with Matthew Duffy done by another friend of mine now in Montreal, Zachary Fairbrother of Omon Ra. They discuss the origins and intentions of the zine, as well as various other things. Zach's blog, Avant-Lard, is great too so check out the rest of it while yr there.
What a smooth record. The Miramichi (formerly Savaa Boom) are dark spaced out lo-fi drone from Halifax. This, their first release (albeit self-released) will irk your inner peace into believing It's all about to blow up in your face, but It doesnt. It just haunts you, over and over again. Despite all that, it still manages to make me feel fairly at ease, and sleepy. It's like a sick warmth though, a cold sweat. A large majority of this was recorded, as far as I can remember, at a live show in late February/early March (??) of 09, and it was a great fucking show. Deerskull played a great set that night as well, and I'll hopefully have something up from them in the next week or so. Anyhow, what Joseph Mclaughlin and Dan Miller decided to do with those recordings was slow them down, really slow them down, and let it sludge on for days. I really like what happened. As I mentioned, the result is a haunting journey through darkened caves and dystopian valleys, not for the dreamers or impatient lollygaggers. I really recommend it if you're into putting something on and laying in bed, forgetting about everything. Dig it now you fugly cankers!
TRACK LIST: 1. Gasses Sound Light / 2. 2 point 4 / 3. Barbarella / 4. Remedy / 5. Michael David Michael Angelo
Easily one of the best bands in Halifax, Omon Ra has been pumping out handsome grooves at a relentless pace for the past few years. Dan Miller and Zachary Fairbrother write soulful spaced out rock n roll folk groove love songs with stirring presence, for the poor and anxious bastards, and if you haven't heard then get up and open yr ears. This is what's happening, all around and in between. To quote a review from Weird Canada, "It’s catchy, droney, vaguely-emotional, and a certified trip. Omon Ra will become a leading creative mind in Canada and I’m assuming there’s a lot more at the source". Complete with a slew of guest appearances from a ton of great people, not to mention the fantastic cover art by Andrew MacGregor (GOWN / Bark Haze), this is a choice little record that you need to hear now. Fav tracks: Its Recreation, Good Friend, Mountain Day After, You Made Me Ill. This is still unreleased but will hopefully make it's way to vinyl sometime in the next few months, so get it now, and bliss out fools.
Also, you should buy Omon Ra's albums HERE & HERE from Fixture Records!
TRACK LIST: 1. Its An Omen / 2. Of Loving / 3. Station Street / 4. Its Recreation / 5. Good Friend / 6. Dragging By / 7. For Strickland / 8. Mountain Day After / 9. We Slept In A Field / 10. You Made Me Ill / 11. Eurydice
Well, I've been M.I.A. for quite some time now, and I do apologize. I'm hoping this new boost of enthusiasm will help me save this blog as I really enjoy doing it, and sharing with everyone. I also love getting yr feedback and comments so please feel free to drop a line whenever.
For my first post back I figured I'd get started on a project I've been wanting to do for quite a while now and have never gotten off the ground. Now technically this post doesnt even count at this point, but we'll pretend. The idea is basically to highlight all the amazing music that's coming out of Halifax right now, and there is a LOT. Meet Chris d'Eon, formerly of Halifax so it counts. I don't know where to begin with this limited tape release on Numbers Station, out of Montreal. This being their first release I think they made a wise choice. It's been a long time since I put on a record, and specifically a record made by a friend of mine, and was absolutely blown away. From the first note to the last this is just full of good feelings. Though far apart musically I'd compare it to the likes of Jim O'Rourke's Eureka, or the song Ice Castles off Ween's White Pepper, in that it has this immense warmth to it that brings you in and makes you feel absolutely comfortable and serene. I particularly enjoy the keys that frequently show up between the more structured songs. Glistening little bursts of fuzzy dreamland clatter. It's absolutely beautiful. I suppose overall it does have a particular sound, that might be intriguing to some and not to others, but I definitely can't pinpoint what it is, so I say just get it and let it take you where it will. I'll be continuing this Halifax thing over the next couple of weeks with some more posts for Omon Ra, Pig, Czar of Neo, The Ether, (hopefully) ECT, and we'll see what else I can come up with. In the meantime, get this tape and blissfully enjoy.
TRACK LIST: Side 1: 1/Untitled/ 2/Prophet Abraham/ 3/Untitled/ 4/Tear Down The Wall/ 5/Untitled/ 6/Untitled/ 7/Street Kids/ 8/Untitled/ 9/Untitled // Side 2: 10/Fana'/ 11/Untitled/ 12/Waiting Room/ 13/Surfin' w/ The Shah/ 14/Spring/ 15/Haydar/ 16/Kangra Valley
I can understand if one doesn't enjoy listening to Merzbow. One may need to just grow up and expand a bit, learn to love all things beautiful, but perhaps that is slightly beside the point. Merzbow for some is just squealing screeching horrible noise (fucking terds), and if you find yourself in this sinking ship of doom then quite possibly this is the album to change you mind (float yr boat? laaame!). Indeed, there is, hidden deep within that ethereal cacophony known as Merzbow, actual tangible rhythm. It is certainly not at the forefront, but I assure you it is there. Just to remind everyone, I am still not extremely well versed in the world of Merzbow, there is much that I have not yet heard (I am trying my best, but it's hard. There is just so much output). That being said, this is my new favourite Merbow album. It's pounding and unwavering and full of brute force, but there is a lucid beauty deep down that I find haunting and captivating. It's unlike anything I've heard from the great Masami Akita. So get this and listen to it contently and explode all over the walls! (Name-drop count: 5 Merzbows!!!! Jesus.)
For starters, my apologies for sucking lately in regard to proper updates. I'm slacking. It's no good, for any of us. I return to you now with a truly fucking beautiful album. Yamasuki Singers' Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki is a gorgeous collection of Japanese singers belting out ridiculously harmonious pop tunes over some rad psychedelic jams. After its original 1972 pressing on the independant label Biram it was re-released, thankfully, in 2005 by Finders Keepers Records, a brilliant little label specializing in lost and unearthed gems of the past. I particularily loved the slower soft songs like Okawa and Aisere I Love You, but the more pyched out tunes, Yama Yama or Kono Samourai, are fucking rad as hell too, for different reasons! So, get this and love it cuz its waaaay too good to be ignored! Thanks to James for showing me this, and for the cereal and tea!
This is the best Link Wray album I've ever heard! If you're a fan at all then get it, and if you're not a fan of Link Wray then get the heck on out of yr seat and jump for joy, 'cause this is gonna be fun! If you know nothing about him all you need to know is that he IS rock and roll. The coolest version of the Batman theme ever, and one of the coolest garage songs ever (Hidden Charms), and tons of incredible garage rock surf guitar licks to shred yr face! If you don't dig it then you probably dont dig much, and theres something desperately wrong with you!! Pure rock and roll goodness from one of the kings!
"Batman shall I start the nuclear power for the batmobile?!" / "Right again, Robin!" / "OK Batman!"
. If you're not familiar with Bill Fay then I suggest you grab all of this stuff. My personal fav of these is Time Of The Last Persecution, but it's all really gorgeous. Fay is one of those "lost beauty" types, never really getting the full credit deserved. His first two albums sold poorly. As a result, the third (already completed) was put on hold until years later when in the early 00's Fay began to develop a bit of a cult following. In 2004 Wooden Hill released a compilation of demo recordings and unreleased songs entitled From The Bottom Of An Old Grandfather Clock. So here he is in all his glory, the complete Bill Fay. The song that hooked me and everyone I've ever shown it too is Maxines Parlour (From The Bottom Of An Old Grandfather Clock), so if you're not sure about where to start that may be worth a try, but I assure you almost every song in this collection is great! Enjoy suckers...
Soooooooo good! Lee Hazlewood has to be one of the greatest voices in music history, and his songs are always so haunting. This is no exception. You like The Moldy Peaches' Adam Green? He took everything he knows from Hazlewood (and Beck)! Nancy Sinatra also delivers some wholly gorgeous vocal melodies on this record. Superb psychedelic-country-spook music for forbidden lovers and outlaws. At times it's completely chilling. I dig it way more then the first Sinatra/Hazlewood collaboration, despite Some Velvet Morning leaving the mix. I really like Arkansas Coal (Suite) and Down From Dover (check out Sinatras voice at the end of the song!), and Got It Together has one of the coolest openings ever ("ohhh suffer alone Jerry Reid, cuz Hazlewood's pickin' tonight!"). Who's got the god damn coke machine?!
TRACK LIST: 1. Arkansas Coal (Suite) (5:36) / 2. Big Red Balloon (4:17) / 3. Friendship Train (3:33) / 4. Paris Summer (2:56) / 5. Congratulations (3:05) / 6. Down From Dover (3:35) / 7. Did You Ever (2:53) / 8. Tippy Toes (2:51) / 9. Back On The Road (2:21) / 10. Got It Together (3:58) .
You either love Vincent Gallo, or you hate him with every fiber of your being. I find it hilarious that so many people put so much effort into hating him, but ahh well. I think his songs are really pretty and his films look nice, and I don't really care whether he's an arrogant asshole or not cuz I aint never met him. I digress.
Enter Bohack, the first record to feature one Vincent Vito Gallo. Shortly after its release the band split up and Gallo began his film career. I totally loved it! Super noisey, super eclectic, very hypnotic! It's nothing like Gallo's later recordings, so don't expect that soft Chet Baker voice to sooth you to sleep. This is way more explosive and aggressive. The albums cover art was done by the famous artist Francesco Clemente. It's divided into two tracks (side A & B), but the album is actually a bunch of tracks. Sorry about that. Also an LP rip, so enjoy it yous!
SIDE 1: 1. The Rock Of Joe The Dog Crowd Noticed / 2. Slow Clock / 3. A Waiter Dies A Large Family For A Tip Leaves / 4. Shot Himself After Falling Three Days / 5. Fat Jaw / 6. If You Feel Frogie Jump / 7. Jesus In Mono / 8. Old Hog Pissing In Sepia / 9. Jerky In Color / 10. To Save A Safe Artist's Ass SIDE 2: 1. Good Brown / 2. It Took Several Wives / 3. The Man With The Flower In His Mouth / 4. They Came As One Person / 5. The White Hand Burned While The Red Hand Held On / 6. Potatoe Skin Hair / 7. 50 Perfumes (Part 1) / 8. 50 Perfumes (Part 2)
I just kind of stumbled onto this album by accident a few months back, and I'm so glad I did. Pascal Comelade is a French Catalan musician often working in the realm of minimalist composition, incorporating children's toys into much of his work. This album in particular, over any others I've heard, is quite peaceful and pretty with lot's of great piano work and soft sound. There's also a superb Brian Eno cover on it (!!!!), a tribute to Syd Barrett, as well as a few other songs you'll recognize. It's perfect to have on when you're feeling mellow, or before bed, or when yr just feeling lazy and want to melt into a puddle. So grab this now cuz you will not regret it! It's gorgeous! Added bonus, this is an LP rip.
TRACK LIST: 1. White light / 2. Approximative but fair / 3. Wyatt ah um / 4. Lettre de Mozart à sa petite cousine / 5. Still life with goldfish / 6. The Grey Velvet Gentleman / 7. From DC by PC / 8. Taking Tiger Mountain / 9. Habanera / 10. Carmen / 11. Avant-midi / 12. Sicilia / 13. Again / 14. White heat / 15. Distant pianos / 16. Paralelo / 17. In a Lebanon park / 18. Courant d'air sur le pommier de Japon / 19. La opera / 20. Barrett
Os Mutantes: If you're not familiar with the Brazilian psychedelic movement than this is where you want to start! Easily one of the best psychedelic bands of all time, Os Mutantes we're full of amazing grooves, brilliant vocals, and tons of psyched out noise. I highly recommend them to anyone who likes to freak out! You can't listen to this and not feel great, grinning stupidly from ear to ear.
"When Os Mutantes was formed, it combined influences from the English-speaking psychedelic acts like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix with the sounds of bands like Sly & the Family Stone. Although they met with limited success in their own time, Os Mutantes also influenced a great number of Brazilian bands such as Pato Fu, Júpiter Maçã and Sepultura, who recorded a cover of the song "A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer". In addition, many contemporary underground or independent bands in the United States and Europe cite Os Mutantes as a major influence. Kurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993, writing a letter to Arnaldo Baptista. Cobain was introduced to them by Pat Fear from White Flag (whose collaboration with Redd Kross and other friends under the name The Tater Totz was the first American band to cover or even cite Os Mutantes on their 1988 LP Alien Sleestaks from Brazil). Beck paid tribute to the group with his single "Tropicália" from the album Mutations. The Bees (UK band) covered "A Minha Menina" on their first album, Sunshine Hit Me. Kevin Barnes of of Montreal cites Os Mutantes as an important influence. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has worked to publish and promote the group's music through his Luaka Bop label." - Wikipedia.com
Rita Lee: Rita Lee is the illustrious vocalist/composer involved in Os Mutantes. These albums arent quite like her output in Mutantes, but it's still really great stuff!
This is for Dan, though I know he already has and loves it. I don't know for certain that I can say it's my favouriteDead album, but while listening to it tonight I felt I should share it with you nonetheless. It's very spacious, yet concise at the same time. I love it, and so should you. Hey Dan, let's listen to this sometime.
"... the Dead were determined to make a more complicated recorded work than their debut release, as well as attempt to translate their live sound into the studio." - Wikipedia.com
TRACK LIST: 1.That's It for the Other One / 2.New Potato Caboose / 3.Born Cross-Eyed / 4.Alligator / 5.Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)
Recently released on X! Records, Shiftless Decay features an ensemble of relentless Detroit Sludge at its finest. Some bands are worse then others, but overall this is one of the better comps I've heard in a while! Heavy psych influenced rock-n-roll/no-wave, in the same vein as The MC5, Blue Cheer, Stooges or Pussy Galore. Toss in some Athletic Automaton and some more modern type noisey clang clang and you've got it! Fucking rad! I really dug Heroes & Villains, Human Eye and The Mahonies a lot.
Put it on, turn it up, and fucking toss! TRACK LIST: 1. Tentacle Lizardo - "Haunted Closet" / 2. Human Eye - "Fix Me First Universe Nurse" / 3. Frustrations - "Psychedelic Motorcrash" / 4. Terrible Twos - "Negative Drip" / 5. Heroes & Villains - "SDWC" / 6. Johnny Ill Band - "Ella Says" / 7. Tyvek - "Flashing Lights" / 8. The Mahonies - ""Paint the Town Brown" / 9. Fontana - "Gotta Split" / 10. Little Claw - "Feeding You Your New Home" / 11. THTX - "Monorails to Nowhere" / 12. Odd Clouds - "Gum Coup Follicle"
Now defunct, Electrelane were an all-girl 4-piece formed in 1998 by two friends, Verity Susman and Emma Gaze. The band draws from many different sources (Stereolab seems to come up a lot) but they always reminded me of what a modern day Raincoats might sound like. Full of fantastic guitar riffs, emotional pull, and sometimes drone like progressions, they could possibly be compared to the likes of Neu! or Faust, but theres a lot of punk and post punk tossed in for good measure. Some don't like em, "too accessable" they cheer with enthusiasm, but I think they're great so whatever. Enjoy it or don't, but make up your own mind.
TRACK LIST: 1. The Greater Times / 2. To the East / 3. After the Call / 4. Tram 21 / 5. In Berlin / 6. At Sea / 7. Between the Wolf and the Dog / 8. Saturday / 9. Five / 10. Cut and Run / 11. The Lighthouse
Here it is. Here's the motherload. Arthur Russell in all his primal glory. If you're not familiar with him then get there. This is, as far as I can find, his entire disco. Breath it in. I'd give recommendations but I think it's important to figure that out for yourself in this case. Enjoy!
"Charles Arthur Russell, Jr. (May 21, 1951 – April 4, 1992) was an American cellist, composer, singer, and disco artist. While he found the most success in dance music, Russell's career bridged New York's downtown, rock, and dance music scenes; his collaborators ranged from Philip Glass to David Byrne to Nicky Siano. Relatively unknown during his lifetime, a series of reissues and compilations have raised his profile in the 2000s." - Wikipedia.com

Ok, this one goes up for Devo, but anyone should feel free to grab it. Headless Heroes features folk singer Alela Diane, but if you're not a fan of her brooding country-folk style don't let that stop you from grabbing this. Sounding more like an optimistic Mazzy Star, this band was put together as a sort of one-off project by Eddie Bezalel. With the help of producer Hugo Nicholson, the two culled together a group of musicians, with Diane on lead vocals, to do their renditions of what they like to call "lost classics and unearthed gems". It's basically a collection of covers, but unlike a lot of covers albums it's full of great songs. I can't remember all of the bands, I used to have a list but I lost it i'm sorry, but they're all great songs. There's Daniel Johnston, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhacs(!!), Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and if that's not enough then go fuck yrself. This is slow and moody, and if thats not yr thing then skip it, but if you like any of the bands then you might as well check it out. I really liked it overall. And just to clarify, this is quite different, musically, from Alela Diane's solo stuff. I think it's more interesting.
Simply put, this is fucking super rad! It's like garage-rock-psychedelic-floydian-velvets. The song Bullet Proof Nothing will make you wish you were this fucking cool! Get it, love it, obsess over it. It sounds like it could have been recorded in 1969, but in a way I like that it's from the late 80's. I picture these guys in a dingy basement, stoned as fuck, not giving a shit what anyone else in the world was doing or thinking, grooving their faces off. Probably the best Canadian band ever, definitely one of the best Canadian albums ever!
"Here's a band that could splice the DNA of Syd Barrett and Soft Machine with Iggy Pop and the Velvet Underground, that could bridge post-psychedelic mind-altering electronics with a buzzed proto-punk urgency: the ultimate garage band, rehearsing constantly and trying everything and doing it all at top fucking volume. And right after they finally got around to issuing their debut release, a well-received seven-inch, in 1978, the band split and became history." - Pitchfork (8.8/10)
Either you've heard Brian Eno and you love these albums, or you haven't and you will. These albums are so ridiculously important, in so many ways. In a word they are Everything. And don't ask me to choose a favourite. I won't. Enjoy this, or die knowing you never have, nor ever will, be One with the world and All That Is....
Finally. At long last. The triumphant Dead Dog returns, and with new music for you to download! I was in Ontario for a few months and since I've been back I just got stuck in a rut and never got around to updating, and I'm sorry. Nevertheless, I'm back and I come bearing gifts. Enter Fred Frith's Gravity. From it's opening cackle and on this album is absolutely raaad. This is basically his first solo record aside from Guitar Solos, a melodic blend of acoustic guitar solos (if I remember correctly), and it's one of my fav's of his. If you're not familiar with Frith then fucking grab this already. While yr at it grab my previous Frith post too, Cheap At Half The Price (1983).
Golden nuggets of goodness is what these are! Dig it...
Also, i'm trying out a new upload service so let me know if there's any problems downloading!
Sorry, I'm currently visiting family, getting ready to head back out east, so I haven't had any time to update. I'll have lots of new stuff coming in the next week or so, so keep checking back.
I'm a fan of Roxy, but for some reason missed this album until about a week ago. Holy, fuck my dick, it's good. I've always loved Brian Eno far more then Roxy Music and finally hearing this album was like finding the long lost Eno album, with Bryan Ferry singing. Pay specific attention to If There Is Something, about five minutes and seven seconds in and on. If you've any sense at all you'll cum on the wall and wish it went on for days. It's fucking completely rad and if you don't like it go jump in a river and leave the rest of us alone in glorious glam rock heaven.
"Falling halfway between musical primitivism and art rock ambition, Roxy Music's eponymous debut remains a startling redefinition of rock's boundaries. Simultaneously embracing kitschy glamour and avant-pop, Roxy Music shimmers with seductive style and pulsates with disturbing synthetic textures. Although no musician demonstrates much technical skill at this point, they are driven by boundless imagination -- Brian Eno's synthesized "treatments" exploit electronic instruments as electronics, instead of trying to shoehorn them into conventional acoustic patterns. Similarly, Bryan Ferry finds that his vampiric croon is at its most effective when it twists conventional melodies, Phil Manzanera's guitar is terse and unpredictable, while Andy Mackay's saxophone subverts rock & roll clichés by alternating R&B honking with atonal flourishes. But what makes Roxy Music such a confident, astonishing debut is how these primitive avant-garde tendencies are married to full-fledged songs, whether it's the free-form, structure-bending "Remake/Remodel" or the sleek glam of "Virginia Plain," the debut single added to later editions of the album. That was the trick that elevated Roxy Music from an art school project to the most adventurous rock band of the early '70s." - AllMusic.com
