Suicide - Suicide (1977)

It's Suicide! Yip! Jump! You probably already know and love 'em, but perhaps not. Someone requested this a while ago and I forgot to put it up so here it is. If you've never heard the magic darkness that is Martin Rev and Alan Vega's Suicide then please do. Pulsing drum machine drones with brilliantly simple and moving synths, and a voice to kill the family. Get on it and jive mutha's, this is the meanest mutt you've ever heard. "Synthpunk" you say? Har Har silly fools, me thinks not. This Is Punk. Everything else is just going through the motions. Dig?

Sick em sickos!

This is truly an original album. Awesome, though most people are going to recoil from it. "Frankie Teardrop" is, IMO, the creepiest song ever recorded.

Their second album (also titled "Suicide"), isn't quite as sparse, having been produced by the Cars' Ric Ocasek (listen to "Shoo Be Doo" on the Cars' "Candy-O" record and you'll see just how enamored of Suicide Ocasek was). It's also not quite as good as the first, but worth getting for "Harlem Baby" alone.

And finally, did you know that Bruce Springsteen is a fan of Suicide? It's true. He even did a cover of "Dream Baby Dream" which you can find on YouTube (I'm a huge Springsteen fan, but I have to be honest and say it's awful). I kind of suspected it when I heard the Vega-esque yelping on a few tracks from the "Nebraska" album.

Who knows how many artists have been influenced by Suicide? Countless.

actually really love the second album, though i agree not as good as the first. pretty much everything suicide has done is good. i also am a huge fan a bruce and di know about his love for them. he was recording nebraska in the same studio at the time of the second suicide record (i think it was their second?) and fell in love. his cover of dream baby dream isnt very good, you're right, but still pretty cool that he was influenced by them. they're easily one of the greatest punk bands in history.
